Shadowing at the Westin

Last weekend I was able to shadow my future boss, Brandi Byrd at the Heavenly Spa. I learned alot that day and was able to understand how a director of such a large corporation interacts with others and continues to ensure the success of the comapny they stand for. I shadowed from 8am to 6pm. I got a full day out of it and really enjoyed it! Brandi started her day around 8 am before the Spa opened at 9. She showed me around and then assigned me to some last minute duties before the doors opened to clients. The place is absolutely beautiful. Then I was trained on the computers and even asisted quite a few clients. I learned how hospitality and PR are alot alike, and I also learned how the two concepts really worked together! I really enjoyed my day and cant wait to begin my career there in the future!!

Celebration South Event

In PR, events are a big part of getting your clients name out. In the case of my events class we had a project of implementing a fundraiser to raise money for the Communications Art Department. Our idea was to set up a booth called “Sweetening Education” and sell snowcones and candy to raise money. I am really excited about the outcome of our event! We had a huge turnout and made a profit or over $260. We sold over $460 worth but $200 went back to the budget! We were able to build relationships with people and have many return clients that day, as well as we were able to really get the word out about our department to the public. The event was great and I am very excited that I could be a part of such a fun and successful fundraiser. Hopefully this will become an annual tradition for the Communication Arts department since it turned out so well this weekend!!!

CVB Visit

Kelli Folker came to Professor Mullers Senior Seminar class on Thursday, April 1, 2o10. She shared her job experiences with us and described skills that she feels are vital for those seeking a communications/public relations career. Kellie graduated from Georgia Southern University in May 2006. She started as marketing Director for Boys and Girls Club Bulloch County, and now is the Marketing director for Statesboro Convention Center and Visitors Bureau. She really enjoys her job, which gives me hope and motivation that I will enjoy the career field I am entering as well. She passed around different publications and marketing techniques that she created for her jobs, and encouraged students to develop knowledge in using Adobe InDesign. Her visit was very interesting and beneficial and I am so glad I was able to be there in.

New PR Job!!!

I currently accepted a position as Associate Coordinator for the Heavenly Spa at the Westin Resort in Hilton Head Island. I am very excited about this job!! I will be able to take advantage of the skills I have learned in my classes and really be able to have a great experince in a rewarding career field! My job will consist of me being in charge of corrdinating reservations, events, as well as concierge services. I will be ensuring that those who have appointments will have everything they need as well as work with corrdinating and scheduling of events such as weddings and conferences that set up appointments with the spa. I also get to use some of my PR and marketing techniques in helping to promote my new company and share with the public all of the amazing things they offer! I am very excited about this incredible oppurtunity!!!

How to choose a Client

Since St. Judes is a childrens hospital for cancer research I would focus my target audience on parents and children, but I would appeal to them differently. When it came to the parents I may segment them according to demographics, sociographics and psychogrpahics.So that depending on their experiences they are not inimidated or uninterested on the help that St. Jude can offer to them. The reason I would appeal to most chararcteristics is because in the situation of having to experience childhood cancer I would want to make sure that those involved are completely informed and comfortable in the information they receive, so it is important to segment these people to ensure that.

For the children, I would want to appeal to their age groups, because being that young, it differs on what they understand and what they dont so you have to be very careful on what they are exposed to.

In 1962 entertainer Danny Thomas founded the nonprofit organization. St. Jude’s is located in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is known worldwide for its excellence in care. It currently is one of the leading research facilities dedicated to children. The hospital is also the only pediatric research hospital to be designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is dedicated to offering the best care to patients and the promise of never turning away a child’s need for treatment due to a family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is an incredible organization that continues to strive on the donations from the contributions of those who care.

Typography

What factors go into a designer’s decision of which typefaces (fonts) to use? What sizes are considered best for business cards? For brochures? Where can beginning designers go to find legal, free fonts to use? Also, post a link to directions (written by someone else) for installing a font.

A designer should use a font that best fits with their personality, as well as that of the message they are trying to portray. If you are trying to appeal to a child, you may want to use a more playful font, while if you want to appeal to a professional a Times New Roman type of font is classic and desirable for that appeal.

According to isnare.com, the best font to use on a business cartd would be around 7-8 for address information, and then a bigger font, around 14-15 for the name. This way the attention goes to who the person is, and they become easily identifianble.

Ethics and PR

Public Relations is said to be unethical. Im not sure I really feel that way, especially with all of the knowledge I have behind the practice. Those who work in the PR industry are just simply trying to save the reputation of their clients without harming the overall effect of the public. To me this is harmless and should not be considered unethical. Although sometimes people do wrong, that shouldnt have an effect on the eindustry of PR.

Eagle Print Shop Adventures!

During one of my class periods my class met at the Eagle Print Shop on campus. I really enjoyed this visit and gained alot of information on their services, so I thought i would share some of it with those who unfortunately were unable to attend.

The Eagle Print Shop is located in Centennial Place, across from the Russell Union. Their hours of operation are Monday- Friday 8am-5pm.

If you have ab assignment that you need to be printed, it is important to use the following tips for a successful result:

Make sure your file is compatible to software version that the Eagle Print Shop can open. if you are unsure it would be of benefit to contact the shop before coming in to print.
Do NOT wait until the last minute to have an assignment printed. The Eagle Print Shop stays busy and it would be unfortunate if you were unable to have a project completed at a timely manor if you wait until its to late. Never assume that something can be done right in front of you, as other students have projects they need printed as well.
Submit your job requests through an email. Its as Easy as 1,2,3!!! Just attach your job, fill out sheet, and attach!!!
and Finally Proofread, proofread, Proofread! Once an assignment is printed and paid for, typo mistakes cannot be undone and reprinted for free so make sure your project is perfect to your standards before you spend the money. Remember the Eagle Print Shop prints assignments, they dont proofread them!

I feel that these are great words of advice that I got from my field trip to the Eagle print shop so I hope they help others as well!

Pictures Make it Personal

When I am looking over a publication, i tend to become more focused on the ones that catch my eye. Now how do these specific publications catch my eye you ask? Simple!!! Pictures!! When we were little we always went straight for the books with the most pictures, and even when we got older, the more pictures, the more likely the chance we will be intrigued. We come from a very visual generation and i consider myself to be an extremely visual learner. I lover pictures! I love taking them. looking at them, and posting them for others to see! There is just something about a picture saying a thousand words. In terms of Public relations, you want to connect with your client, as well as having others establish a connection with them too! The best way to do this is to make it personal, and the easiest way to do that is with pictures! By adding photos in, those who are viewing your work can become more intrigued visually and thus they become involved with the publication. A spread that contains pictures is much more visually appealing than one that is all type. if you can draw a viewer in through pictures then you may be able to keep them involved in interested in the message that is trying to be portrayed. In PR it is all about becoming appealing to the audience, and what is more appealing than a picture!!! : )

Tiger Woods & PR

With all of the commotion going on surrounding the Tiger Woods controversy I felt it was appropiate to talk about the apparent PR aspect involved. Tiger Woods has always seemed to live a very private life until the recent issues that have surfaced. With all of us privacy now gone, Tiger has obviously got a great PR firm representing him who in the midst of all the drama has still been able to keep him and his family behind the scenes and the only information out there is what the media is putting out there. A press conference held is to ensure that Tiger can revamp his reputation, but for the most part his fans will still like him because they didnt care for Tiger for his personality but instead for his golf game, and the affair isnt going to change that he is a good golfer!
